I believe that if your objective is to communicate with impact and to influence an individual or a group of people, the most important thing in this category must be developing a strong connection with them. You will not be able to influence them unless you have created rapport. You will not be able to make an impact on them and leave a strong impression unless they trust you. Creating a connection with the other person is essential.

Equally, if you have not worked through, and built a strong internal connection with yourself, which includes your core beliefs, your core values and the main message that you want to share, then you will also struggle to make a connection with the other person/people you are communicating with. Equally, if you do make a connection with them, if your message and your outcomes are not clear, they may feel they are not getting value from you, which can lead to a lack of trust, causing them not to want to invest their time or their money into whatever you are offering them.

So what can you do in order to improve this area of your communication immediately?

To immediately improve this area of connection, I encourage you to first connect with yourself. At this stage, this simply means understanding what are your core values and beliefs. Then based on this - the main message you want to share.

The easiest thing to do is journal around these three areas to gain clarity. Extract what is in your mind and put it down on paper. This exercise is not something that can be rushed so my recommendation is to block out a couple of hours for yourself to focus.

For example, when I host a ‘Communicating With Impact™’ live event, the message I want to get across must be in alignment with my core beliefs and values. Before any event I will personally block out time to evaluate all the key messages I want to get across to the audience. If anything is misaligned I know it will break the connection I have with the audience. So I ruthlessly removed that message from the live event content. A big tip here - before a talk, presentation, pitch or any interaction. Do not be afraid to cut anything from your message that you personally do not connect with. 

What can you do to master this area and your communication as a whole?

Now improving one area is different from total communication mastery. This is because I refer to this area of communication as a ‘component’. This component is then made up of additional ‘sub-components’.

You can see this clearly in the following diagram:

As you can see from the diagram, your result is just one component out of 38 components. This diagram is the complete system - which I refer to on live events as ‘Dr Ro’s Total Communication Mastery System™’.

I know what you are thinking, Woah! I just thought communication was about talking confidently in front of people.

This is what most people think. And this is because communication is fundamentally not taught. Not taught in schools, not taught in companies and not taught as a complete system like this anywhere.

For example, to truly create connection. You will need to learn, practice and regularly implement the following sub-components:


Make a note of these, as you will then know what to next focus on after you have improved on connection.

When you commit to improving your communication, what can you expect to happen?

Remember I said, this skill is not taught - certainly not to the level it deserves. Think about it, we are taught to read, write and speak. This is very different from being taught how to communicate with impact.

What does communicating with impact mean? Let’s take connection for example. Have you ever been in the scenario where you have tried to sell your product/service, given a talk, attended a meeting or been a part of a family gathering and felt like you had no connection? 

Maybe you are pitching a client and they seem to become despondent, lose interest or just don’t quite believe what you are saying

Maybe you have delivered an important speech to a group of people and immediately afterwards people talk about something else

Maybe you are talking to a social group, and find yourself feeling awkward or uncomfortable

Maybe when dating, you struggle to get a second date and don’t get a call back

Now imagine if you mastered connection. Imagine you knew how to implement connection consistently. You understood how to use the sub-components - authenticity, style, observation and rapport.

How would these common scenarios now feel? How would they play out in your business, job, family life, relationship?

What impact would this have on your finances, dating life, child-parent relationship and career progression?

This is what it means to Communicate With Impact.

To create connection and have so many communication tools in your toolbox - that you blow people away, you wow them, you leave an amazing impression. You become unforgettable.

Hopefully, by now you can see, by not only mastering connection but by working on communication as a total package, you will see an increase in how many customers you attract, how easily you get a job promotion, how you get a greater connection with your kids, how your relationships and dating life improves, how you increase finances, improve negotiations and more. In reality, communication is so foundational that you will see improvements everywhere.
